I got started carving when I was in the Boy Scouts in Grade school - I took all the art classes I could while in high school.

Like most folks, I got married started a family and got away from art for the most part, but still did a few things along the way. After the children were grown I set out to create again. I found a study cast, and boy was I hooked. Then I found a Carving club- that's when things really started to take off. The Club was the place I learned alot about finding schools and different styles of carving first hand. I wanted to do it all, but my passion was the human bust. I just couldn't stop carving the Human face - I bought book after book on the human anatomy.  I took classes with Vic Hood, Jeff Phares, and a few others. Jeff Phares and I became friends and Jeff asked me to assist him in his classes. Boy what an honor, and what fun that has been! I still work with Jeff when his classes are close enough to me and really enjoy teaching and helping others learn how to create carvings that make them as proud of their work as I have been my own. One of my most favorite moments in a class is when someone sees how easy it is to do something they have had a hard time with and that smile comes on them, you know the one that says I got it now smiles.

I got started teaching on my own in 2005 and decided to focus on helping the person that wanted to learn the face, in hopes that the person could have a better understanding of what was going on- and get the most out of their books and the more advanced classes that are out there.  In my class we focus on the eyes, nose, and mouth, shaping the face, and some on design but mostly how to carve the face and its components correctly and in the right place.

I hope you enjoy my work . If you have any questions send me an email and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. I may be out of town with a class but I try and get back to everyone quickly. -Ken Carter
